More Big Companies Adopt Search Engine Optimization (SEO) practice

From today, the headlines of the BBC News website will become longer to make its stories easier to find on search engines.

“We estimate that about 29% of BBC News website UK traffic comes from search engines.”, says Steve Herrmann, editor of BBC News website.

The BBC will therefore allow its journalists to create two headlines for a story. While the shorter one between 31 and 33 characters appears on the front page and the website indexes as well as on mobile phones, the longer one – up to 55 characters will appear on the story itself – and in search engine results.

Search engine optimisation has become a standard practice for most online organisations over the past couple of years. As users began to find stories more and more via search engines or Google News, via personal recommendations on social media or in email, via links on Twitter or their RSS readers, news publishers wanted to be sure of reaching them.

“The practice of ‘search engine optimisation’ – making content in such a way that it is easily retrieved via search engines – is an important area for us and for others across the web,” explained Steve Herrmann to the BBC news users in a blogpost.

So does the justification damage the use of language? Or does it only stop journalists from inventing too complex phrases that were not understandable anyway? Since search-optimised headlines will tend to include all the key words a user might type in when he or she is searching for a topic, the headlines may even be more useful.

In fact, in the news sector, the changes are minimal – as the BBC shows in an example: “Possible counter-bid for Cadbury” becomes “Ferrero and Hershey in possible counter-bid for Cadbury”. Might be a bit harder to scan on a front page, but the longer headline is definitely more informative.

Credit Suisse, Alexa.com, Financial Report Recommendation, a Joke?!

Recently, Credit Suisse issued an investment report and gave a Hong Kong stock, Alibaba.com a ”overweight” rating and raise the target price to $23.7. The reason is because pageviews of alibaba had been increased, according to Alexa.com

For search engine optimizers, all know that alexa measures data based on their users. So, the traffic ranking could have bias. The following is extracted from alexa.com:

”A site’s ranking is based on a combined measure of reach and pageviews. Reach is determined by the number of unique Alexa users who visit a site on a given day. Pageviews are the total number of Alexa user URL requests for a site.”

Alibaba.com serves b2b market. In fact, I wonder how many business users install and use alexa toolbar in their office computer. How come a very big investment bank can use Alexa traffic ranking as a basis to make investment recommendation? How can we trust those investment report?

Such a big investment bank can misunderstand and misuse of Alexa data, and it explains why some SEO companies can make use of Alexa traffic ranking and show their clients how good they are and ask clients to trust them.

10 Mistakes of E-commerce Site

E-commerce sites have to be appealing and easy to use. Visitors need to be enticed to stop and purchase with a smooth sales process.

Mistake 1: No contact data! Visitors need to be given a choice, either telephonically, by fax or by email. You must also publish your address. Otherwise, visitors do not trust you.

Mistake 2: Doing too much with your fonts and colours. Two or three different fonts running through the site is more than sufficient. Too many colours are distracting.

Mistake 3: Using outdated information (including stock out or not), to attract and keep visitors returning content must be fresh and up to date, and make sure no broken links in your site.

Mistakes 4: Disabling the ‘back’ button, this annoys visitors.

Mistake 5: Having slow loading pages is caused by having too many large images or as a result of low quality web hosting service. In addition, meaningless flash homepage or header can also annoy visitors. Why do I need to wait for the flash if it does not provide me additional useful information?

Mistake 6: Your site is not compatible with common browsers such as firefox, IE and Chrome, etc. Visitors may simply vist another site.

Mistake 7: Your site is not search engine friendly, and the content management system or e-commerce software do not allow you to do SEO. It can make your site not searchable in search engines.

Mistake 8: Photos that cannot be enlarged for close viewing are not a good thing to have on an e-commerce site. Shoppers need to be able to see every little detail.

Mistake 9: A site is full of graphics could be looked very appealing but your site cannot rank high in search engines without text content. If your site is a decoration or your traffic level is independent with search engines, feel free to build a full graphical website.

Mistake 10: The checkout page is too complex. Visitors will give up if they can’t check out within 3 steps: 1. Enters their demographics information such as billing and postal address, name, etc. 2. Enters Credit Card information, 3. Confirm all entry. Some companies want to perform cross-selling when the visitors are going through the checkout process, it is quite annoying.
